Repatriating Place: Update

Guest blogger Dr. Eric Zimmer recently got in touch with The Repatriation Files to share the good news that the U.S. Board on Geographic Names has decided rename Harney Peak “Black Elk Peak.”

In his February contribution to this blog, Eric recounted his efforts in “the drive to rename Harney Peak, the tallest mountain in South Dakota, to its Lakota name, “Hinhan Kaga” (“the Making of Owls”). ”

As the primary author of a report prepared by the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS), Eric argued “reclaiming Hinhan Kaga comports with Lakota naming conventions and the growing global momentum behind renaming indigenous places.” photo
